It will be smooth sailing for locals and visitors to the popular holiday hot spots of Huskisson and Vincentia this June long weekend, with the $164 million flyover at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Jervis Bay Road now open.
Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said it was “fantastic” to see traffic flowing over the flyover ahead of the busy long weekend.
“We all know how difficult it has been to get out of Jervis Bay Road during holiday periods, so I commend the 110 workers who worked day and night to get the bridge open ahead of schedule,” she said.
“This is such a momentous milestone for local drivers and visitors to our region in terms of traffic flow and driver safety.”
The south-bound lane opened on Wednesday June 3, and the north-bound lane is due to open on Friday morning, June 5 - weather permitting.
Mrs Phillips said she was proud to have joined Bay and Basin residents to fight for the flyover, and to secure $100 million federal funding towards its construction.
“A massive shout out to all community members, including Vincentia Matters, who never gave up the fight for the flyover.
“This is the busiest intersection on the Princes Highway from Nowra to the Victorian border, where drivers have had to negotiate a major bottleneck for decades.
“This is a big win for all of us who live on the South Coast, and those who visit our beautiful region.”
