New mobile phone infrastructure will provide improved mobile coverage to residents living in rural areas around Jamberoo.
A new tower will be constructed by Waveconn in Minnamurra Lane to the north of Jamberoo village, and is expected to be completed in 2025.
The tower is one of 47 new mobile solutions across Australia to be awarded funding under Round 2 of the Peri-Urban Mobile Program (PUMP) announced this month.
Federal Member for Gilmore has welcomed the funding which will improve mobile phone coverage for residents, property owners and business owners living in and around Jamberoo, as well as visitors to the region.
“The grants program is aimed at improving mobile connectivity in bushfire and other natural disaster-prone areas along the edges of Australia's major cities,” Mrs Phillips said.
“These areas have been historically underserved because of the high cost of deploying infrastructure, difficult terrain, planning challenges and lower population densities.
“This new infrastructure means local residents will be better connected with family and friends and it will help bridge the digital divide for small businesses in the village.
“I’ve worked hard to improve mobile coverage in the Gilmore electorate and I know Jamberoo residents will be thrilled once the new tower is switched on.”
PUMP complements the Mobile Black Spot Program, providing grant funding to mobile network operators and infrastructure providers to deploy new mobile phone infrastructure to address mobile reception and coverage issues in peri-urban areas.
Mrs Phillips said the program targeted long-standing mobile coverage and reception issues in areas where the bush meets the suburbs, including Wollongong.
Under Rounds 1 and 2 of PUMP, the Australian Government has committed $69.1 towards mobile coverage solutions at 97 peri-urban sites.
The rollout schedule will be published on the grantees' websites once the contracts have been executed.
