A red ensign flag presented to World War I recruits as they departed Nowra as part of the 1915 Waratah March will be restored thanks to a Federal Government Saluting their Service (STS) Commemorative Grant.

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips supported the Shoalhaven Historical Society’s successful application for $2,420 to preserve the flag.

“The Waratah March red ensign is such an important piece of local military history that represents the sacrifice that so many young men from right across the Shoalhaven made in WWI,” Mrs Phillips said.

“I’m really proud to support the restoration of the fragile flag so that it can be safely stored and displayed at the Nowra Museum.

“A huge thank you to the Shoalhaven Historical Society members for ensuring the survival of the ensign so that generations to come can learn about such a significant event in our town’s history.”

Red Cross President Mrs Rodway presented the red ensign to Captain Blow when the Waratah March left Nowra on November 30, 1915, bound for Sydney’s Centennial Park.

According to the Shoalhaven News at the time, an “enthusiastic demonstration” was held outside the Nowra Post Office in Junction street as the 70-strong group heeded the “call of the empire”.

Mrs Phillips said it was important that stories of military service were commemorated and shared in a defence town like Nowra.

The Albanese Government has supported 72 community organisations across the nation with more than $1.3 million funding through the latest round of the 2025–26 Saluting their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program.

Since its inception, the STS Grants Program has funded thousands of projects nationwide, shining a commemorative light on the veteran community and the sacrifices they have made.

Ex-service organisations, community groups, local councils, schools, and individuals are encouraged to apply for funding for projects acknowledging Australia’s proud military history.
