North Shoalhaven Meals on Wheels – Jervis Bay and District Services has been successful in their application for funding under the Stronger Communities Programme round 8.

Recently Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips met with the Jervis Bay Meals on Wheels volunteers, who have received $5,000 dollars in federal funding through the Stronger Communities Programme.

Jervis Bay Meals on Wheels have used the funding to update a vegetable preparation area, including buying a new potato peeling machine. The volunteers will also use part of the funding to construct a covered area outside which will help volunteers stay comfortable and safe during meal preparation.

“Meals on Wheels does wonderful work supporting people in our community who need it most. I’ve heard hundreds of times just how much of a difference these volunteers make to people’s lives,” Fiona said.

Jervis Bay Meals on Wheels provides over 22,000 meals a year. The meals are prepared fresh and delivered by the Meals on Wheels volunteers.

“The positive impact of a healthy meal and a having a smiling face to deliver a meal to your home can’t be understated. I’m so happy to support Meals on Wheels, who do so much to support those we care about,” Fiona said.

“This service is much more than just a meal delivery service - the volunteers visit with smiles, kindness and caring.” Fiona concluded.

Susan O’Brien of Meals on Wheels said that the money has gone a long way.

“The new potato peeler really speeds up the process of preparing food and having it in our kitchen will help volunteers to make more meals for those who need them,” Sue said.

“This is an industrial peeler, which is no small thing - it really speeds up our cooking process,” Sue added.

“We really just want to get more meals out, and keep supporting the community – Fiona [Phillips] has been a great supporter of Meals on Wheels,” Sue concluded.

The Stronger Communities Programme provides essential funding to local community groups and councils for projects that improve community participation and contribute to vibrant communities.
