Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips has been out on the doors talking to voters about the big issues in Gilmore, from cost-of-living and Medicare to housing, education and the environment.
She said Labor’s plan to strengthen Medicare was resonating with South Coast voters.
“I’ve been out talking to people at pre-poll venues and candidate forums across the region and affordable healthcare is a definitely a huge issue for people,” she said.
“I’ve had so much support for my plan to deliver a new Medicare Urgent Care Clinic for Nowra and to expand the operating hours of the Batemans Bay clinic to 6am till midnight seven days a week.
“People understand how these clinics take the pressure off our busy emergency departments, and I’ve had so much positive feedback from Batemans Bay which has seen more than 12,700 people since the doors opened.”
Mrs Phillips has lobbied for and opened a headspace in Kiama and walk-in adult mental health services in Moruya and Nowra. She has also delivered the hugely successful South Eastern Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinic in Milton.
“I’m really pleased that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will build on our local health services, which includes upgrading the Nowra Mental Health Hub to a Medicare Mental Health Centre to provide free access to psychiatrists and psychologists, either on-site or on-call,” she said.
Mrs Phillips also said it was wonderful that young voters were taking a keen interest in this election.
“As a mum of four young adults, I get it. I know students and young families are doing it tough. I know they are worried about housing, about education and about the environment,” she said.
“That’s why it’s so great to be having conversations with young people about Labor’s plan to make free TAFE permanent and to wipe 20 per cent off student debt.
“I’m so pleased that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will help first home buyers purchase a home, because for years this dream has been out of reach for many.”
As a former TAFE teacher, Mrs Phillips said Labor’s free TAFE was changing lives.
“We want to keep TAFE free to help our young people gain skills and get ahead,” she said.
“This election is about building Australia’s future, and young people are our future.”
