Letter to the Editor - Milton birthing services still in a ‘tailspin’ - reopening long overdue

There’s been a deafening silence over the promised return of birthing services to Milton Ulladulla Hospital. That’s not good enough when it’s been reported – “South Coast birthing services closure could result in ‘death of a mother and baby’ union says” ABC Illawarra, 4th August 2016.

The Milton Ulladulla Times headline “Our maternity services caught in a tailspin” 21st June 2016, got it right. It certainly is a “tailspin”, with no public information from the “by invite only of the Member for South Coast” working group set up to progress the return of maternity services.

Just last week the Liberal NSW Health Minister made a surprise shock announcement that Shellharbour Hospital’s services would be privatised, part of five regional NSW hospitals services to be privatised. That was despite no indication of the privatisation prior to the 2015 NSW State Election, similarly no notice then either about the closure of birthing services at Milton Ulladulla Hospital.

Some transparency and accountability over the return of birthing services to Milton Ulladulla Hospital is long overdue.
